[awkward & awesome thursday]

[Click the photo to link up with Sydney]
It's that time again, folks. Awkward and awesome Thursday!

Awkward
1. Moving all of my bedroom furniture into the center of the room so that the drywall guy could patch  the walls and then finding out that I have to go to bed with the walls still undone and all of the furniture still in the middle of the room.
2. Husband-to-be taking me out to celebrate (see Awesome section) and then finding out we were going to Buffalo Wild Wings...with his brother...and I was ignored the entire time...because they were talking about football...but not the real football, fantasy football. Clearly someone wasn't getting my "hints" about P. F. Chang's. As in "Hey babe can we go to P. F. Chang's? I have a coupon for a free appetizer." :)
3. All of my guests will be getting wedding invitations probably today. All of fiance's folks will get them in a couple days (we were in charge of mailing our own batches). I hope I don't get mean phone calls about this.
4. Running into people I hadn't seen in a LONG time at the home improvement store. When I hadn't showered yet that morning because I just ran there to get paint for my family's demo project. Oh and ps I was covered in sweat and drywall...yay... "So nice to see you too."

Awesome
1. It's official! I'm the new Kindergarten TA at the private academy where I substituted last year! I am so excited to be working there full time. It's a relief for Mr. C especially because we have a house payment now..
2. Wedding invitations have been sent (by me at least).
3. The person who is renting the house that we are buying is moving out next Saturday! We get to get in there on the 7th! It's time to roll up the sleeves and start painting!
4. I got the most adorable shoes that I have ever seen in the mail yesterday! Perfect!

[shoes]

I know you are so intrigued by my title. I also know that you think, "Wow, that Kayla sure is clever. She states one word encompassing what the entire post will consist of and yet she doesn't bother to make it witty or thought provoking, she just inserts one, singular word. Brilliant."

Well, I should tell you that shoes are my, like most women's, addiction. It's true. I hate that I love them so much, really I do (no I don't, who am I kidding?). This isn't really a problem for me and the (almost) husband. However, he does get a kick out of telling me, while I'm drooling over a particular pair, that I have two pairs just like it on my shoe tree. "But not THIS pair...."

Okay, the addiction is bad, I tell you. Admitting is the first step, right? I have 52 pairs of shoes. I'm turning into Imelda Marcos (minus my husband being an embezzling crook) oh and also minus the fact that I have 1, 008 less pairs than she did...

This 31 for 31 has taught me that I miss my shoes more than anything else that I can be content with fewer clothes and with being more creative. I have had to survive wearing only 6 pairs of shoes for 24 days now, all the while my other little pretties are beckoning me to secretly wear them around the house and then change into the challenge shoes when I go out (what? that doesn't happen...clearing throat...)

During the 31 for 31 I'm not supposed to buy anything new. And I hadn't...until yesterday. Here's the back story:
I found these adorable heels at Urban Outfitters way back at the start of my challenge but said, "no, self, you cannot buy those lovely things until you are done with your challenge." So I refrained from buying them and instead contented myself with pinning them on Pinterest and subsequently going to urban outfitters online to look at them daily (I'm not obsessive, I'm not obsessive, I'm not...). Well then one day last week I visited my favorite shoes and the most horrible thing popped up on my screen! It was a white box with menacing blue letters which read "Sold Out." Noooo!!!! I was pretty sad about it. I think I even told MC that I cried over them (I didn't, but I wanted to).

Fast forward to last night. We were sitting on the couch watching How I Met Your Mother re-runs and I noticed that Robin was wearing Louboutins. I said this aloud, not really to MC, because I know he doesn't care, but aloud nonetheless. Which he then responded to with, "huh?" "Louboutins. Like the shoes." "How do you know they are Lou Vuitton?" "Louboutin, silly. And because they have a red sole which is specific to him." "Oh..."

I then proceeded to pull up the Christian Louboutin website on my phone and show him shoes with red soled. Mistake. I started drooling. I pulled up shoe after shoe, showing it to him and oohing and ahhing but ultimately asking him to guess how much each cost and then shocking him by quoting a price that was 10x what he guessed. This inspired another game.

I would open up the thumbnail page that showed 4 shoe thumbnails at a time and would make him guess which ones I liked best. I told him I was training him for the day when he goes out and buys me shoes on his own to surprise me. I did this with several other websites, gradually getting less and less expensive until I was on the Aldo shoes website showing him shoes. He picked the shoes he thought I would like for a couple of times until he noticed the prices on these shoes and said "Hey these are cheap! Why aren't we buying you these?" Now that is the attitude I like to hear!

Eventually I went back on the UO website to see if perhaps something close to my shoes resided there and you know what?! They were back in stock! $20 cheaper, I might add! (Insert Hallelujah chorus) Without even thinking of my challenge I pushed the "add to cart" and "checkout" button in less than a second. The process ended with me hugging the hubs and telling him that "I am just so happy."

I know that was a long story, and congratulations if you made it this far. However, if I can't share my joy with you over shoes, what can I share with you?

[fill in the blank friday]

1.   One of my happiest moments ever was      the day I got engaged. There was just joy and hugging and calling friends.

2.  Summer is wedding season and weddings are   awesome when you know that people are meant for one another. It sucks when you know that people are getting married for the wrong reasons.

3.  This summer    could definitely be better. It is an icky summer. It is hot and humid here in Atlanta with no signs that it will let up any time soon.

4.  My summer food of choice has been   salads. They are so light and healthy so you know you don't have to worry about losing bikini body.

5.  My summer uniform has been    it has been a lot of tees and tanks with pants/shorts or maxi dresses.

6.  If I could spend the entire summer in one location I would choose      Cabo San Lucas, Mexico. Away from all of the cares of the world.

7.  My summer anthem is     Harder to Breathe by Maroon 5. Love that song!

[saturday letters]

Dear Mr. C,
Last night we went and watched your old roommate rock it out with his band at the Alamo. It was awesome. I'm sorry that I won't be as awesome of a roommate as he was. I will say things like "we have a hamper for a reason!" and "can you pick up some tea bags from the store?" I'd like to think that even though I'll be a different roommate, you'll still like me better. Right?

Dear 70 days til our wedding,
(Holy dang! It's only 70 days til our wedding?!) I have a lot of things to get done during your short hours. Not the least of these are: ordering my bouquet, mailing our invitations, scheduling my hair, makeup and nail appointments, deciding on wedding shoes, re-booking our honeymoon (ugh long story), and getting all of our little decorations for the reception. I think I can make it. I hope... And well, if I don't, it's no big deal, those things are just things and at the end of the day I'll be a newlywed, and we all know they wear rose colored glasses anyway. ;)

Dear September house,
I will call you that for as long as we both shall live, or rather, as long as (almost)husband and I reside in you. I cannot wait to take possession of you in...September. Be afraid, though, be very afraid. I will conquer you! You will no longer look like a house in the 'burbs, you will be the dark, metal-y, industrial home that me & the Mr. love. I know, right now you are filled with yellow and orange, but that's got to be traded for grey on the walls, organic feeling elements, charcoal cabinets, and stark white. I'm so excited to give you an overhaul and make you ours!

Dear wedding gown, you hang in your cloth bag from the frame around my closet. You are like a Christmas present that sits, waiting in the corner, in the middle of October, just taunting the name on the gift tag to dive into your mysterious goodies. Secretly, though, you know that I do dive into you on occasion, when no one is around and I just sit on my couch wearing you. We have good times together, you and I. I can't wait to make a memory in you - marrying the man of my dreams.

1.   I am a (morning, evening, middle of the day person)      Evening person! I am a total night owl. However, I also don't mind waking up in the morning. So with me, I guess, who can really say?

2.  My favorite Pandora stations are   Glen Hansard, Brett Dennen, Mumford & Sons, Stornoway, and Sigur Ros. And in the next couple months when Mr. C gets a Pandora station, THAT will be my favorite.

3.  3 of my "must-have" songs for a road trip playlist are   It's Gonna Be Me by N*Sync, A Whole New World (yes, from Aladdin) and Lucky by Jason Mraz & Colbie Caillat - Mr. C and I sing along very loudly to these songs.

4.  My favorite pattern is  stripes.

5.  My favorite perfume is   oh gosh. I love Lucky brand, Prada and Burberry. On a daily basis I wear Pure Seduction by Victoria Secret. I'm super classy, I know.

6.  Rules are   generally for a person's good (Yes they are, Mr. C! No, you can't go 70 in a 45, it's dangerous!) but sometimes the rules are just dumb because they were made after one person did something stupid and ruined it for everyone else. Yes, I'm talking to you, skirts at my private high school, you and your mid-calf hemline rule after some girls rolled their knee-length skirts to be slutty.

7.  My most overused phrase or punctuation is    Phrase is "Really? Really..." Yes, SNL did get that segment from my daily life. When we first saw that, Mr. C said "hey sounds like you!" I use it way too much. I also say "I just wish..." as in "I just wish you would give ME a back rub for once" or "I just don't want you to watch the Braves game AGAIN love you."

[what i'm loving wednesday]

I'm playing catch up right now. I am so pathetic.

I had a lovely minication with my mom to North Carolina. We went to Charlotte from Saturday-Monday to visit all of her old college friends who now live there. We spent just about every meal with a different friend of hers. It was so fun to hear their stories about her in college. She was a cutie, for sure.

I took her on her first Ikea experience. Needless to say, she LOVED it. I mean, really, who doesn't love Ikea?! She also had her first On the Border and Cheddar's experiences (restaurants, for those of you who just said "Whaa??") I had been to both restaurants when I lived in Mississippi so I knew what a gold mine of restaurants we had stumbled upon in Charlotte. I maybe just might want to move there...but probably when I'm retired, because there is still nothing like Atlanta nightlife.

So, we had a great weekend, but very full and so we were exhausted by the time we returned to our hotel every night (a big contributor to my MIA status). Anyway, though, on to what I'm loving Wednesday!

1. As always I am loving this man. (What a stud!)
2. I'm loving that we had our "talkingiversary" last night. The anniversary of when we started doing that thing before you're actually dating...you know..."talking." We just look for reasons to celebrate life. So July 12th is just one of those reasons. It's special to us. We had filet mignon and asparagus grilled by the almost husband (see above stud) and salads thrown together by yours truly. I wish I had a photo of our dinner to give you but we inhaled it before it even had a chance.

3. I'm loving that it was his mom's birthday today. There was a point in time where they were not sure how many birthdays she would have, as she had cancer. However, today she is cancer-free and celebrating birthday number 62! We love her so much and we are so happy that she is still with us and happier than ever! Here she is blowing out the candle on her ice cream, oh and G creeping up in the photo.

4. I'm loving that it is only 71 days until my wedding! What what!! Can I get a "hallelujer"?! Seriously, if you don't understand the Madea reference, please go watch the movies.

5. Finally, I'm loving that tomorrow I'm going to be getting a lot done. Nothing is really required of me tomorrow and almost hubs works late/has practice so I have the whole day to get some sheez done around here. Not the least of this is wedding stuff (ie invitations, etc.).

Well, that's what I'm loving. What are YOU loving?!

Today I'm wearing...
A sheer Charlotte Russe tank, New York & Company skirt, and Charming Charlie gladiator sandals. The only accessory is a handmade necklace from the Tolupan Indians of Honduras.

[31 for 31 - Day 9]

Gosh guys, I'm super plain Jane today. I've got the Target tank, Charlotte Russe jeans and Charming Charlie gladiator sandals going on. As well as my Croft&Barrow straw fedora and Old Navy flowery scarf. It's no excuse, but it was due to being a travel day today and leaving at 7am for a 4 hour drive to Charlotte, NC. I know, no excuse but you'll just have to bear with me. I'll try better tomorrow!!

Have a super Saturday, folks!

[31 for 31 - Day 8]

Hey my lovelies! It is day 8 of 31 and I'm feeling more empowered than ever! This is my favorite outfit, thus far. I have been a fan of each of these pieces individually and I am really loving them put together. The top comes from American Eagle, it's one of their "boyfriend, off the shoulder tees;" the bottoms are ponte pants via Simply Vera by Vera Wang, and on my feet are Ann Taylor oxfords. My accessories are low key (that's how I like it, yo) with some handmade wooden bracelets (I would take credit for making them, but let's be real, I'd be taking credit from 3rd world markets, and that is just kicking a horse when he's down). Finally, the belt is straight from "Closet de mi Padre." Don't hate, he's got some rad stuff.

So I'm leaving...never lookin' back again (Jesse McCartney reference, anyone?) Really, though, I'm headed to South Carolina tomorrow-Monday with my lovely mom to visit some of her old friends and reminisce. Do you love that? I do. I'll still be posting pictures but my posts will be sporadic (yeah, I know, what else is new?) Know that I will be thinking of you, my lovelies!

"Happy freakin' weekend!"

Ps did anyone dress up as a cow for free Chick-fil-A today? I remembered it all week...until today...and I went there for a sweet tea and BAM! 47 mini cows...I thought I had stumbled upon Mayfield dairy or something. Oh well, there are always coupons...

[fill in the blank friday]

1.   My plans this summer include   travels to Honduras, Florida, Macon, South Carolina, Alabama, Ohio and Savannah/Tybee.

2.  The best summer I ever had was  This one, maybe? Or last summer. Last summer I fell in love and it was new but this is spent with that dude, planning our wedding, and growing closer together.

3.  Summer is   the beach. warm weather. maxi dresses. gladiator sandals. straw hats. sunglasses. sun. pool. sunbathing. smell of sunscreen. cool drinks. grilling out. friends. relaxation. travel.

4.  My favorite summer food is fruit, hands down.

5.  The best way to quench a summer thirst is with   let's be real, people, it is flavored lemonade/tea, no contest.

6.  My summer uniform consists of   maxi dresses, gladiator sandals, straw hats, shorts, tanks, and swimsuits.

7.  The best thing about summer is spending time with friends and family. Oh and also travelling/going on mission trips. I look forward to that all year long!!

Well dearies, I know it wasn't much, but hey it wasn't a photo of what I'm wearing. Can you just be proud of me just once? ;)

[awkward & awesome thursday]

All I had to type in that little title box was "[a" and Blogger said "uh duh this means you're finally getting around to your awkward & awesome Thursday post....when it's 20 minutes from Friday." Well listen here, Blogger, I don't need your 'tude, okay? I spent all day doing errands and then at premarital counseling..so there...

For real, though, guys. I'm such a bad friend; I just post pictures of my clothes and then I'm all "deuces see you tomorrow." Do I get brownie points for visiting you and at least communicating via your blog, though not my own? Huh? Do I?

You all know how awkward my life is [this hasn't ever happened to me, though I'm sure it's simply a matter of time] but luckily I can throw some fun "awesomes" in today.

PS Every time I see this photo I may or may not (okay I do, I'll admit it) want to recreate this photo for myself. Isn't she adorable?

Awkward
  • I found out tonight at dinner with our premarital counselors that Mr. C reads the old b-to-the-log, here. I must admit, I scrolled through older posts to make sure I was always gracious about him. Seriously, I knew I hadn't ever said anything unkind but that doesn't mean I wasn't still scared.
  • I talk about kids all the time. Like, we don't even have a little ounce of desire for them in the near future and yet I can't quit bringing them up. Someone muzzle me!
  • I got locked in the bathroom at the restaurant tonight. No one knew, thank goodness, because I only screamed silently to myself kept myself under control and didn't let claustrophobia get the best of me.
  • Spoiler! This is another bullet point about being in the bathroom at dinner. I wore suspenders today and let me tell you, those things are a pain in the royal rear to get off when your bladder is about to combust. Thankfully I've been potty trained for a year or two now and I'm able to hold it even in stressful scenarios like having to figure out a way to take of the 'spenders. (This is where you praise me for a job well done and give me and M&M or something, right?)
  • When the girl at Plato's closet was wearing the same shirt as I was. I shouldn't be fazed, since our outfits were totally different, but it will still humble you when a 16 year old has on your shirt. This is what I get for still shopping at American Eagle...
Awesome
  • I feel the need to remind you that I got rescued by SWAT. Uh yeah, that's pretty awesome. Duh. If you haven't read the story, you can read it here.
  • This past week I was present to witness a flash mob. What what?! I even knew a few of the participants. And by knew, I mean I babysat them a long time ago. Made. me. feel. OLD. Anyway, here's the video...I'd love to pretend like I am not the unsteady hand behind the camera, but I was... I only claim to be a photographer, not a videographer, give me a break ;)

  • Gap now sends their receipts via email if you opt for it. Uh duh! Where have you been all of my life? My purse would weigh about 7 pounds less if I would just clean it out every so often every place would email their receipts.
  • Finally, spending time with a godly couple from whom we seek guidance and answers, is the most awesome thing of the day. They really inspired us tonight to just enjoy. They reminded us that when it comes down to it, all we have is each other and toilet paper going over or under is too trivial to argue. By the by - hubcap and I do not argue this issue, we agree that it will be over in our home, but still, it was a good example of stupid shiz that couples fight about.
What awkward things have happened to you this week?

[31 for 31 - Day 7]

It's the last day of the first week! It has already been fun and challenging! I am currently headed out to our nearest Plato's Closet to donate 3 garbage bags full of my sister's clothes that once upon a time I had handed down to her. I figure it's only fair that I get whatever possible off of these clothes since I originally put all of the money into them. Whatever is left over will definitely get donated though, so don't think I'm super selfish. I'm a philanthropist, people, I promise! ;)

My items used today are: striped American Eagle v-neck, Elle shorts, and American Eagle leopard print flats. Accessories are numerous today, a fabric flower that I made in my hair, suspenders, and 2 wooden bangles from Honduras and the gold bangle you saw on Day 4. Well that's all for today, folks!

Wednesday, July 6, 2011

[31 for 31 - Day 6]

Guys, I know I've been super slacking on my posts and you guys are probably already sick of just seeing what I'm wearing. I have had a crraazy busy week and just can't seem to get anything done on the homefront: cleaning, blogging, etc. I'm lucky that I manage to shower everyday. So until I can get my shiz together here is what you'll have to content yourselves with: what I'm wearing.

Clearly I woke up on the 70s boho side of the bed this morning. I'm wearing a Forever21 grey maxi dress and Forever21 brown leather boots. Uhh I didn't realise that they were both from the same store until just now. Fate. I accessorized with only an American Eagle vest and a cotton belt from Kohl's c/o Simply Vera collection.

Well I'm off to be the speaker at a youth event! Ta-ta for today!

[31 for 31 - Day 5]

First things first, Day 5 of 31 for 31!
Accessories include a leopard print scarf that my bestie brought back from China for me and a wooden bangle that I brought back from Honduras for myself. Additionally, the future Mr. really liked this outfit, so that's always a plus.
___________________________________________________

It's Tuesday! It's summer! It's 81 days until I adopt a 23 year old man for the rest of my life. So I'm just appreciating the small things!

When I was living in Mississippi, going to college, I heard one particular phrase used quite a bit. To me it seems that it is only a Mississippi thing, but maybe you have heard it in other parts of the world... The thing is: they call little gifts, given for no reason, "happies."

For instance, if I just came up to you and gave you a precious little headband I would say "This is for you. It's just a little happy." It was for no reason and they don't expect anything back, they just knew you would like it. That's good old southern hospitality, for "y'all." Don't be fooled, just because I'm from Atlanta, and Atlanta is in Georgia, and Georgia is in the South, does not mean that I am southern. Atlanta pretty much dissociates itself from the South. But I digress...

Today I felt like I had just received a bunch of "happies" from God. You know, those days where you just all of a sudden count your blessings and realize how good you have it? So I think I'll just detail some of the little things that I'm loving today.

  • Chick-fil-A sweet tea. If you don't expect this from me by now then you should just walk away.
  • Spending a Tuesday evening just listening to future husband play and sing as he prepares to audition for American Idol. Will we see you at the audition in Charleston?
  • My handy Droid that tells me when I need to not wear heels because it will rain and pulls up handy coupons when I'm at Gap buying a wedding shirt for the Mr.
  • Time spent with my mother-in-law as she reminisces about years past, old loves, her kids, and stories about Elvis and JFK.
  • Planning a trip to get a piano from Mr. C's dad so that we can have a large musical instrument in our September house.
  • All of the blogs that I'm currently following that inspire me, humor me and challenge me; you all are a little "happy" every day.

Well those are just a few of my little happies today, folks! What are yours?

[31 for 31 - Day 4 and 4th of July]

Happy Independence Day from Atlanta, folks!!

I hope you are all having a lovely fourth of July!! Mr. C and I celebrated with his whole family last night at his brother's house. I took quite a few pictures but there are none of me & him or me and any of my friends who were there. Oh well we'll probably get some tonight :) I'm headed off to an annual pool party/BBQ with church friends and then our annual tradition of watching the fireworks at the mall (see above). Here are a few of my favorite photos from yesterday.
Mr. C going for the football

This was how they kept the keg cool outside: trashcan of ice with duct tape insulation. Apparently it was the engineer of the group who came up with this nifty invention...the keg coozie.

Mr. C's niece & nephew

She's about to be my niece! How cute is she?

Corn hole - one of the many games played.

Brothers

Brother G, nephew CR, Mr. C., nephew JR (I know that his nephew is the same age, long story) and brother BR. Big old family!

Backyard golf - another serious family game.

Nephew JR tossing another niece in the air! Good thing his mom didn't see this!

I didn't get any firework pictures because I was sans tripod but I will definitely be on that bandwagon tonight when there are huge ones! And before I forget, here is my Day 4 of 31 for 31. I know that I do not look very patriotic, I'm sorry. I didn't really factor that into my 31 items...

Accessories include a bangle from Morocco (the country, not a shop), a ring from New York & Company and earrings from Simply Vera by Vera Wang.

Once again, Happy Independence Day! I hope that is lovely for you!!

Sunday, July 3, 2011

[31 for 31 - Day 3]

Today I'm Wearing...
Accessories include a Croft & Barrow straw fedora, American Eagle vest, and Charlotte Russe long necklace.

Also, you may have noticed that my hair is darker. This is actually my natural hair color but back in April I had put an auburn tint on top of it and it was subsequently lightened to a lighter reddish brown by extensive time in the sun when I was in Honduras and Florida. I'm much more comfortable with my natural dark brown, though.

Well this was me at 7am before heading out with Mr. C to his church where he leads worship. I look a lot more awake now but I figure that since you only need to see my outfit anyway, this photo will do. ;)

Happy Sunday, pals! Do you get the day off tomorrow? Mr. C does & I don't have any weddings to photograph tomorrow so we are gonna kick it chilling style! :)

Saturday, July 2, 2011

[31 for 31 - Day 2]

Today I'm wearing...
Accessories: Old Navy scarf, Kohl's cotton belt and Charlotte Russe peacock feather bangle.

I won't lie, it has been cool to talk to people about my decision to do this challenge. I saw a lot of my friends today at a pool party and they had all read about the challenge on my Facebook. I feel like it really opens people's eyes to the fact that we can get creative with stuff we already own!

So many people have told me "There is no way I could do that!" Um why not? I can understand not wanting to try it out, of course. After all, if you are content with what you have and do not have urges to buy every cute new thing you see then heck you have more willpower than I do; but that you can't? Preposterous! I'd definitely urge everyone to try it, even for a week and just see how creative you can get.

Plus, it's funny how many compliments you will get just by straying from the same old thing you always wear. I have worn each of these pieces before but never together in this particular combination. I have worn the yellow shirt with a cardigan, a scarf, skinny jeans and flats; the skirt I have worn with more dressy tops, cardigans, etc. Pairing the two was fun and new and people noticed!

So my challenge to you is that even if you don't decide to do the whole challenge, at least try to see how creative you can be with your closet tomorrow!

[31 for 31 - an introduction & a day late]

Good morning, Saturday! You are looking lovely, as always. I'm so happy for all of the loveliness that you... bring me today: pool party, cook out, time with Mr. C, giggles with girlfriends...I'm pretty pumped, that's for dang sure.

So I remixed Kendi's remix of 30 for 30; and made it 31 for 31, because well duh July has 31 days! I chose 31 items total and will have to wear a combination of only these items for the month of July. It is all about learning to work with what I have. I will also not be buying any new clothing items during this time period.

I believe that this will truly open up a whole new viewpoint of being a good steward of what I have as well as being content with what I have. Obviously I have much more than 31 items in my closet, but this is a challenge of being humble and realizing that we, especially Americans, have more than we need or deserve.

So I took these items:

That was yesterday, July 1=Day 1. I'll have photos of today's outfit up in a bit when I get out of gym clothes - hallelujah that those don't have to take up some of my items!

I'd like for you all to join me, and join Kendi and all of the others who are being brave and shopping their own closets. You might learn a lot about yourself over this next month!

[SWAT evacuation]

Well yesterday was a day much like any other. I spent an hour reading my favorite blogs while drinking my chai latte on the porch swing. I then wrote my blog post for the day, cleaned the refrigerator, did the dishes and made my bed. I ate lunch and watched an episode of Monk on Netflix. Following these little projects I embarked on the hour long process of making potato soup.

Aside: While making potato soup at 4:00 I heard what I believed to be three little pops of fireworks. I thought to myself "well someone is a little too overanxious for the Fourth" but thought nothing else of it.

I did some other cleaning and cooking for the next half hour until my sister came to me and said "There is a police officer trying to climb over our fence." "Huh?" I went to the kitchen window, and sure enough a cop with a shotgun is trying to hop our fence. Uh hellooo we have a gate... I went outside onto our porch, since he's hopping into our backyard, and ask if I can help him with anything. He told me "everything's fine, just get back in your house."

Okay either everything is fine and dandy OR I should get back in my house because those don't really mesh. But I went back into the house and my sister and I made rounds of all of the windows in the house trying to see what was happening from every possible angle. Being that I'm living with my folks until I move in with fiance in September, I called my mom and told her that our road was likely blocked off and she would have a hard time getting in if she came home. Fortunately she was able to park in the neighborhood across from ours and she was standing with a group of officers at the end of the road.

I was told that there were shots fired and that one had penetrated my next door neighbor's front door. Creepy! I sent my sister down to the laundry room which is all brick and doesn't have any windows and I kept watch from the upstairs window. My mom then called back saying to get our stuff because we were about to be evacuated. We were to stay low until they got us out of there. I yelled at Hollyn to put some shoes on, threw on my own Toms, grabbed my purse, contemplated grabbing my camera, turned off the stove and waited, crouched, by the back door.

Thirty excruciating seconds later two SWAT officers approach our dining room window off of our porch with rifles strapped to their chests. They motion for us to come out together. I lock the door and we duck behind the carport closet. They tell us to stay there until it's clear. We are then ushered down into our yard and behind the bushes below our porch, each of us told to hang very near to each officer. They led us back to our garden, over our fence, through the neighbor's yard (the ones who had been shot at & called it in), over their fence, through bushes and to the street across from ours.

At this point we had no clue what was happening. My mom had been able to give us little information over the phone before we evacuated but when we approached she told us as much as she knew. The woman across the street had fired shots and was now holed up in her home.

For the next 4 1/2 hours we waited in the yard that overlooked our road, wondering if she would come out of her own accord or if they would be dragging her out in a body bag. They of course, had to wait so long to get warrants, search warrants, etc. It was excruciating. We sent my sister to a friend's house and my mom and I waited and waited and waited. At 9:00pm she surrendered to the SWAT team. She was then frisked and questioned on scene before being transported.

I tell you, it was quite eventful, and I feel pretty badarse right now, to say the least, but it is not something I'm wanting to endure again anytime soon.

I kicked myself for those 4.5 hours for not having my camera, but of course I couldn't resist taking a few on my phone.

I know that you can barely see it, but that Wall-E looking thing is the bomb robot.

Me + SWAT = what a day. This must have been early in the process, I was still looking chipper.

There were over 100 cops there...That's just too many in my opinion, seeing as how a robot got the job done.

The SWAT mobile kind of dwarfs the detective cruiser. PS that particular detective earned the not-so-affectionate title, from me, of Detective Douchebag. Am I a 17 year old boy sometimes when I say things like that? Yes. I accept it.

Well how was your Thursday? I'm planning to milk this thing for all it's worth. "Sorry again that I had to cancel dinner; I was, you know, being evacuated by the SWAT team." "Sorry I missed your football game, I was being evacuated from my house...by the SWAT team." "Oh I missed your wedding? I would have been there, except, well, you know, I was kind of tied up with being evacuated by the SWAT team & all." Yes, I do suppose this is my new fail safe go-to move.

Happy Friday! It is now the four day, fourth of July weekend! What are your plans for the 4th?
